What Is an Aerobic Treatment Unit?
A conventional septic system is passive: a tank lets solids settle, and the liquid seeps out into a drain field where the soil finishes the job. An aerobic treatment unit is a small, active sewage treatment plant in your yard. An air pump — the aerator — bubbles oxygen through the wastewater, feeding aerobic bacteria that break down waste far faster and more completely than the anaerobic bacteria in a standard tank. The treated water leaving an ATU is clean enough to be disinfected and sprayed or dripped onto your lawn instead of relying on the soil to absorb it.
That difference matters enormously around Baton Rouge, because our soil is the whole problem.
Why So Many Baton Rouge–Area Lots Require an ATU
Most of East Baton Rouge, Livingston, and Ascension Parishes sit on heavy clay with a high water table. When a sanitarian runs a percolation test on a building lot in Walker, Prairieville, or Central, the water frequently just sits there — clay doesn't absorb effluent fast enough for a conventional drain field to work safely. Under Louisiana Department of Health rules, administered through the parish health units, a lot that fails percolation or is too small for a properly sized absorption field generally must use a mechanical treatment plant instead.
In practice, that means a large share of new construction in our area — especially the newer subdivisions in Zachary, Central, and across Livingston Parish — goes in on an ATU from day one. If your builder or parish inspector told you "this lot needs an aerobic system," that's not an upsell. It's the permit requirement for your soil.
The Parts of an ATU (and What Each One Does)
- Aerator (air pump): the heart of the system. It runs more or less continuously, pushing air into the treatment chamber. When it dies, treatment stops — and the smell tells you fast.
- Treatment tank and clarifier: chambers where aerobic bacteria digest waste and remaining solids settle out before discharge.
- Chlorinator: a tube that holds chlorine tablets to disinfect the treated water before it leaves the system. It needs tablets added periodically — and they must be calcium hypochlorite tablets rated for wastewater, never pool trichlor tablets, which can react dangerously.
- Spray heads or drip lines: most local systems discharge through pop-up sprinkler heads that distribute treated water over the lawn; some use subsurface drip instead.
- Alarm: a light and buzzer that trips when the aerator loses air pressure, the pump fails, or water rises too high in the tank. It's annoying by design — it means the system needs attention now, not next month.
Louisiana's Maintenance Contract Requirement
Here's the part that surprises new ATU owners: Louisiana requires aerobic units to be covered by a maintenance agreement with a licensed maintenance provider. The initial contract typically comes bundled with the installation for the first couple of years, and after that you're expected to keep a renewal in place. Most homeowners in our area pay a few hundred dollars a year for it.
A proper contract covers periodic inspection visits — checking the aerator, filters, spray heads, chlorine supply, and alarm — plus a service response when something trips. It usually does not cover major parts like a replacement aerator or pump, though some providers offer upgraded plans that do. Common ATU Problems We See Around Here
- Aerator failure. Air pumps run 24/7 in Louisiana heat and humidity; most last several years, not forever. Symptoms: alarm on, septic smell near the tank, gray or foul water at the spray heads.
- Alarm sounding. Could be the aerator, a failed discharge pump, a tripped breaker, or high water after heavy rain. It's a diagnosis call, not automatically a big bill.
- Chlorine smell — or none at all. A strong bleach odor at the spray heads can mean over-tabbing; a sewage odor usually means the chlorinator is empty or the unit isn't treating properly.
- Spray head problems. Clogged, broken, or mower-victim heads spray poorly or pool water in one spot. Cheap fix — but only if addressed before the yard turns into a marsh.
- Sludge buildup. ATUs still need pumping every three to five years for most households. Skipping it eventually sends solids into the spray system and shortens the life of everything downstream.

Can I switch from an ATU back to a conventional septic system?
Almost never. If your lot required an ATU in the first place — failed perc test, small lot, high water table — those conditions haven't changed, and the parish health unit won't permit a conventional system on soil that can't support one. The realistic path is keeping your ATU healthy, which is far cheaper than replacing it.
How much does the required maintenance contract cost?
